In many countries in Europe such as the UK, manual cars – ie cars with a manual gear box  are generally favoured – the majority of cars manufactured for the UK market are with manual gearbox and the vast majority of people don't learn to drive in an automatic car. So what are the advantages of automatic driving lessons in Portsmouth

Certainly in the UK learning to drive an automatic car is advantageous as without a manual licence you cannot drive a car with a manual gearbox. This results in the anomaly that a US licence holder can drive a car unsupervised on British roads for a year with a overseas licence permit even though they have not driven a manual car before. So, apart from that digression – learning to drive a manual car in the UK is definitely the best option to go for.

However that doesn’t answer the question which is the best to drive? The answer to this will depend on what you want. A manual gearbox car gives you more control of your acceleration and can enable you to choose the gear you want for maximum acceleration. Although a manual car helps to give this effect by use  “kick down” this is a rather clunky way of achieving the same effect. A manual gearbox also gives you more of a feeling of being in control.

Alternatively – an automatic car may be seen as the lazy alternative. No gear changes, no clutch control to master – just start the car, put it in drive and go. Everything is done for you except speeding up, slowing down and steering. However this is ideal for motorists who are expecting to spend hours in slow moving traffic jams. Continual depressing and releasing of the clutch as you creep forward a few yards at a time is very wearing for the motorist.
